Research Scientist II (Medicinal Chemistry)

Vertex's product pipeline is focused on viral diseases, cystic fibrosis, inflammation, autoimmune diseases, cancer, and pain. Vertex co-discovered the HIV protease inhibitor, Lexiva, with GlaxoSmithKline.
Vertex has an exciting opportunity for qualified candidates in the area of medicinal chemistry. Job responsibilities include preparation of both single and focused sets of small organic molecules, development of optimized synthetic methods as needed, creating and interpreting project relevant SAR, and problem solving. Candidates must demonstrate a thorough knowledge of organic reaction mechanisms, be up to date with contemporary synthetic methods, and be able to balance rational concepts with creativity. The successful candidate will be able to work independently, be adaptable to changing needs, and be able to multitask to meet key goals. A strong desire to grow as a medicinal chemist and the courage to challenge conventional wisdom is essential.
Key Responsibilities
• Primarily responsible for executing organic synthesis in a timely, efficient, and independent manner
• Create and interpret SAR with a clear understanding of the biological data
• Organize efforts to stay consistent with project priorities
• Clearly and effectively communicate ideas and results (both verbally and in writing) to a broad range of audiences
Minimum Requirements Minimum Requirements
• Ph. D. in organic synthesis with 2-5+ years of productive, relevant post-doctoral experience or
• MS in organic synthesis with 5+ years of productive pharmaceutical experience or
• BS in organic chemistry with 8+ years of productive pharmaceutical experience
